- Understand the different driving instructor qualifications in South Australia.
Overview
When selecting a driving instructor, having the right information and clear options makes all the difference. At Licence Help, we aim to give you everything you need to make the best choice – including understanding the types of qualifications that instructors hold.
In South Australia, there are two main instructor qualifications:
- VORT (Vehicle On Road Test)
- CBT&A (Competency Based Training & Assessment, also known as Logbook)
Before choosing your learning pathway, it’s important to know the difference between these two options. Below, we explain each one to help you make the best decision for your needs.
VORT
The Vehicle On Road Test (VORT) is the traditional pathway to obtaining your probationary licence in Adelaide.
This process involves taking a practical driving test with an authorised examiner – note that this person will not be the same instructor who conducts your driving lessons.
The VORT is designed to assess whether you are a safe and competent driver. The test generally takes around 45 minutes and includes:
- Five slow-speed manoeuvres: U-turn, 3-point turn, reverse parallel park, angled park, and hill start.
- On-road driving tasks: lane changes, handling traffic lights and roundabouts, reading road signs, and interacting safely with other road users.
To pass the VORT, you must score at least 90% and comply with all road rules throughout the test. Any breach of road laws will result in an immediate failure, and the test will end.
One of the key benefits of the VORT method is that it can be faster and more cost-effective, particularly for confident drivers.
In South Australia, VORT assessments are conducted by private authorised examiners, which means you cannot book the test directly through the Licence Help platform. However, your driving instructor can assist in arranging this for you.
CBT&A (Logbook)
The Competency Based Training and Assessment (CBT&A) pathway, commonly known as the Adelaide Logbook method, involves completing a series of 30 tasks with an accredited instructor.
The main advantage of this method is the flexibility it offers – you can progress at your own pace and spend extra time on the skills that need further improvement.
Task 30 is similar to the VORT test; however, it is carried out by the same driving instructor who has been teaching you.
Once you successfully complete all the tasks, your instructor will update your Driver’s Companion and issue a certificate of competency. With this, you become eligible to apply for your P1 licence.
Keep in mind, CBT&A (Logbook) instructors are often in high demand and may be booked out several months ahead, so plan accordingly when choosing this option.
While all driving instructors in South Australia are authorised to provide VORT lessons, not all are certified to conduct CBT&A (Logbook) training. Their qualifications will be listed on their Licence Help profile page.
You can also use the ‘Lesson’ filter at the top of the page to narrow your search and find the right instructor for your needs.
