Who is this guide for?
Learners using the Licence Help booking platform
What will you learn?
How to estimate the number of driving lessons you may need
Overview
After completing your first driving lesson, your instructor will be able to give you a clearer idea of how many lessons may be necessary. This will depend on several factors, including:
Any previous driving experience
Your confidence behind the wheel
How quickly you pick up and apply driving techniques
New Drivers
If you have never driven before, we generally recommend booking 10 to 15 hours of lessons with an accredited instructor. For learners who feel less confident, it’s quite common to take up to 20 hours of lessons. Everyone learns at a different pace, so it’s important to fully understand what you’ve been taught—not just to pass your driving test but to become a safe and capable driver.
If you’re a new driver but have had some informal practice, for example with a family member or friend, 7 to 10 hours of professional instruction is usually enough to refine your skills and prepare you for the test.
International Driver’s Licence Holders
Many international licence holders choose 3 to 6 hours of lessons to get ready for their driving test in Australia. However, due to a relatively high failure rate in this category, those who are less confident may benefit from 6 to 9 hours before attempting the test.
Learning to Drive a Manual Car
If you already hold an Australian driver’s licence but wish to switch to manual, most learners need around 3 to 5 hours of lessons to feel comfortable.
These are general guidelines, and the exact number of lessons will vary depending on your individual progress and confidence level.
