This will be useful if:
- You are a learner using the Licence Help booking platform
You are trying to:
- Find out how many driving lessons you may need
Overview
After your first lesson, your instructor will be able to give you a clearer estimate of how many lessons are recommended. This is based on factors such as:
- Your previous driving experience (if any)
- Your confidence behind the wheel
- How quickly you pick up and apply new driving skills
New Drivers
If you have no prior driving experience, we suggest booking 10 to 15 hours with a qualified instructor. Less confident learners may need up to 20 hours of instruction. Everyone learns differently, so it’s important to feel comfortable with what you’ve been taught—not just to pass your driving test, but to become a safe, capable driver.
For new drivers who already have some practice, such as with a friend or family member, 7 to 10 hours of lessons is usually enough to refine your skills and get test-ready.
International Licence Holders
Most international licence holders take between 3 to 6 hours of lessons to prepare for the driving test in Australia. However, because many in this category experience a high failure rate, less confident drivers may benefit from 6 to 9 hours before attempting their test.
Learning to Drive a Manual Car
If you already hold an Australian driver’s licence but want to switch to manual, most people require 3 to 5 hours of lessons.
These are only general guidelines, and the exact number of lessons may vary depending on your confidence, skills, and learning pace.
